Newcastle United are kicking off their Premier League campaign with a home game against Liverpool. Both clubs have new managers in place and it is hard to predict how things will go.
Matthias Jaissle arrived in the middle of pre-season when Eddie Howe walked out. He has not gotten a lot of time with this squad and it will be interesting to see how far he has been able to implement his ideas.
On the other hand, this is the first competitive game as Liverpool manager for Andoni Iraola as well. But he does have a lot better idea of the Premier League.
Newcastle United will enter this game as underdogs, even though they have home advantage. But at the same time, an upset should not surprise anybody.
Newcastle United’s first starting XI of the Matthias Jaissle era has been announced:
Can Newcastle United pull off an upset?
It is safe to say that the fans won’t be overly confident with the team that has been put out by Jaissle. But this is the reality of where the team stand at this point in time. There is no hiding from that fact.
Newcastle United will need to make more additions to the squad over the remaining summer transfer window. There is a lack of depth and overall quality in a number of positions.
Until then, they will be hoping that they can get a result against Liverpool. And to be honest, this feels like the weekend for an upset.
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have both lost their openers despite entering the season with high expectations. Could Liverpool end up with the same fate, owing to Newcastle United?
