The key numbers behind the challenges of Zandvoort The Dutch Grand Prix returned to Zandvoort this weekend, with the short, narrow circuit once again set to place a premium on tyre management, track position and strategic precision. At just 4.259 kilometres, Zandvoort is one of the shorter circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. The lap may be compact, but the strategic implications are anything but. With 72 laps on Sunday, teams will have to make every pit stop, tyre choice and overtaking opportunity count. Here are the numbers that could matter most during the Dutch Grand Prix. 72 laps and 4.259 kilometresZandvoort's relatively short lap means the field comes around quickly. That can make traffic particularly significant, while lapped cars can also become a factor more frequently than at longer circuits. With 72 laps scheduled for the Grand Prix, drivers will complete more than 300 kilometres of racing. The compact nature of the circuit also means that a driver who loses time in traffic can quickly find themselves under pressure from cars behind. Around 20 seconds: the pit-lane penaltyA conventional pit stop at Zandvoort costs roughly 20 seconds, making tyre strategy particularly important. The circuit's 80 km/h pit-lane speed limit keeps the overall pit-lane loss relatively manageable. That is one of the reasons a two-stop strategy remains a realistic option rather than an automatic strategic defeat. However, a second stop still needs to be justified by the performance gained from fresh tyres. Teams will therefore be closely monitoring degradation throughout the weekend before committing to their race strategy. Around 13 seconds under the Safety Car The strategic equation changes dramatically if the Safety Car appears. A pit stop under Safety Car conditions costs roughly 13 seconds, around seven seconds less than a normal stop. That reduction can make an additional tyre change considerably more attractive. And Zandvoort has demonstrated that Safety Car interruptions cannot simply be ignored. The circuit produced three Safety Cars during the 2025 event, meaning teams will have to keep one eye on the possibility of a neutralisation when planning their strategies. A driver who has already completed a pit stop at the right moment could gain a significant advantage if the Safety Car appears soon afterwards. 1.6 seconds: the price of an overtake Overtaking at Zandvoort is notoriously difficult, and the numbers underline just how important pace advantage is. A driver attempting to make a pass can effectively pay around 1.6 seconds per lap in the process of closing the gap and fighting the car ahead. That makes overtaking a costly exercise if the pace difference between the two cars is small. If a driver has less than around one second per lap in hand, simply sitting behind another car may be more effective than repeatedly trying to force an opportunity. This places even greater importance on qualifying and track position. At a circuit where overtaking can be expensive, starting near the front can be worth far more than at a venue where passing is relatively straightforward. 0.05 seconds per lap: the two-stop trigger Tyre degradation could ultimately determine whether teams favour a one-stop or two-stop race. The key threshold is around 0.05 seconds per lap of degradation. Below that level, the one-stop strategy becomes extremely difficult to beat because the additional pit stop cannot recover enough time through tyre performance. Above that threshold, however, a second stop becomes increasingly attractive. Fresh tyres can provide enough of a pace advantage to compensate for the additional time spent in the pit lane. That makes Friday practice and Saturday's long-run data particularly valuable. Teams will need to establish not only how quickly the tyres lose performance, but also how that degradation changes across different compounds and fuel loads. C2, C3 and C4: the tyre selection Pirelli has once again selected the C2, C3 and C4 compounds for Zandvoort, the same nominal selection used at the Dutch Grand Prix in 2025. However, the 2026 tyre family is new, meaning last year's degradation data cannot simply be transferred directly into this year's strategy models. That could make the first practice session especially important. Teams will have to build their understanding of the new tyres quickly, working out how aggressively they can push without triggering excessive degradation. The combination of the C2, C3 and C4 compounds should give teams several strategic possibilities, but the optimal approach will depend heavily on how the new-generation tyres behave over a full race stint.
