Australia thrash Bangladesh inside two days in Mackay
Australia hit back strongly after their shock defeat in the first Test against Bangladesh, winning the second match by an innings and 51 runs in Mackay on Sunday. Mitchell Starc starred with 10 wickets as Australia completed the Test inside two days.
Starc finished with match figures of 10 for 51, having taken 6 for 12 in the first innings as Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64, before picking up four more in the second. It was his fourth 10-wicket haul in Test cricket and took his tally to 445, moving him past Dale Steyn into 10th on the all-time list.
Bangladesh could manage only 95 in their second innings, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scoring on 31 and Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten on 29. Pat Cummins took 3 for 10 and Nathan Lyon 3 for 25 to wrap things up.
The result created a rare piece of history, as the Mackay Test became only the 28th in the game's history to finish inside two days. From 1877 to 1946, 15 of the 275 Tests played finished in two days, and there was not a single instance across the 1,233 Tests played between 1947 and 1999. Since 2000, 13 of 1,124 Tests have ended inside two days.
