Newcastle United will kick off their Premier League campaign today with a home game against Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool side. But no matter what the result is today, the Magpies will clearly need to make multiple signings before the summer transfer window closes.
The squad has been significantly weakened over the summer following the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. The players who have been brought in are youngsters who might not be ready to contribute meaningfully yet.
Nico Gonzalez is one player Newcastle United have been linked with lately who has the ability to walk straight into the starting XI and improve the team.
Obviously, signing a player from Manchester City is never simple. But it does look like the club are open to the prospect of Gonzalez leaving this summer, but if one condition is met.
Newcastle United told they can sign Gonzalez on one condition
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United must offer Man City at least £52 million to complete a move for Gonzalez. The Manchester club want to recoup the entire fee they paid to sign the Spanish midfielder from FC Porto last year.
It is also believed that Gonzalez’s Man City exit could accelerate when the club finalise their own deal to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi in the coming days.
Gonzalez is someone Man City would have seen as a future starter when they signed him. But he has not met those expectations just yet.
Of course, any move would depend on the player as well. Newcastle United will know that better than most, having been turned down by so many players this summer already.
The positive news is that reports have suggested that Gonzalez is open to the move. Then again, the same thing was said about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as well and look at how that eventually turned out.
Signing Gonzalez from Man City would be a coup for Newcastle
It remains to be seen if Newcastle United do end up making a move of that magnitude for Gonzalez. At the end of the day, he is someone who has failed to meet expectations at Man City.
That being said, considering the position that Newcastle United are in right now, there is little doubt that Gonzalez would be one of the club’s best players straight off the bat, if the Magpies were able to sign him.
He fits the transfer strategy that Newcastle United have seemingly adopted this summer as well. Gonzalez is still just 24 years of age and has not even come close to his prime yet.
Yet, he has already played senior football for clubs like Barcelona, Man City, FC Porto and Valencia. So, he is a serious talent who can work under the right circumstances.
