SFA to chair 'critically important' meeting as all SPFL clubs called to St Andrews for crunch summit The news comes amid growing concerns about the opportunities handed to homegrown young players in Scotland The SFA have called for a "critically important" meeting with all SFPL clubs next month to discuss the future of the national game. Despite reaching the finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1998, Scotland crashed out of the competition at the first hurdle after failing to progress from the group stages - with boss Steve Clarke stepping down after seven years in the role just minutes after our elimination was confirmed. Scottish football also continues to face scrutiny for the number of young, homegrown stars handed opportunities at first team level, with just one two Scottish players lining up from the start in Dundee United and Rangers' clash at Tannadice in the opening game of the Premiership season last week. And in an email shared with BBC Scotland, all 42 SPFL teams have been asked to attend a summit at St Andrews on September 4 to work towards a solution of improving the state of our national game. The meeting will be chaired by SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell and chief football officer Craig Mullholland and will "discuss opportunities" around homegrown talent and receive input from clubs who have "optimised their elite talent development model". The email also states that the objective of the meeting is to also focus on the 'current reality' that football in Scotland currently finds itself facing. The SFA are yet to confirm who will be succeeding Steve Clarke as national team head coach. Scotland return to action next month when they begin their Nations League B campaign with fixtures against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia across two weeks at the end of September into early October.
