West Ham’s summer sort-out will continue apace with eight days until the transfer window closes. What started with Callum Wilson and Adama Traore quitting the club in June looks likely to end with Magassa and possibly Diouf (who was not even on the bench yesterday) being sold before 2nd September if reports are true. A total of eleven departures – and counting – has been offset by half as many incomings so much remains to be done. In deciding the fate of youngsters like Freddie Potts and Callum Marshall, Nuno has sparked intense debate amongst fans, many of whom felt there was more to come from several of those now departed the side. And course, as it had to be, two of the recent departures found the net yesterday. Callum Marshall, sold to Luton for a few hundred thousand quid, came on and equalised with a lovely shot on the turn yesterday to stick two fingers up at Nuno whilst Niclas Fullkrug succeeded where Taty Castellanos failed miserably and notched a goal from the penalty spot on debut as his new side Werder Bremen ran out 3-0 winners. Uncomfortable reading for Nuno and for West Ham supporters this morning after their record Championship splurge for Arne Engels achieved nothing, and the young midfielder looked overwhelmed as all around him mediocrity ruled. As West Ham’s manager summed up after the game: “I’m disappointed. It’s not about the way we played, it’s about the situations in the box. We didn’t defend the throw in properly [that led to Jones’ opening goal], we didn’t create enough in the offensive box. We created a lot of situations but this is football, and we have to be more precise in the boxes. I didn’t know exactly the number of shots [we had] but we created a lot of situations but weren’t able to take them today.” Ironically, Fullkrug and Marshall managed to just that on a day that really couldn’t gave gone a lot worse for West Ham’s beleaguered manager, who now has to sort his wayward side out in just a couple of sessions ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to St Mary’s.
