Following an unconvincing 38-21 victory over the Stormers in the Greatest Rivalry tour clash at DHL Stadium on Friday, here are the player ratings for the All Blacks. 15 Josh Moorby: Some promising moments with ball in hand, but his aerial work wasn’t quite as efficient in the first half. Dave Rennie’s side weren’t really tested in that area in the Nations Championship, but it is something they will face plenty of in South Africa. Moorby then scored a fine try in the second period but received a yellow card late on as it compounded a mistake-ridden display. 5 14 Leroy Carter: It didn’t always work out for the wing, but he was certainly lively and threatened the Stormers defence. Quick and strong, Carter bounced off a few defenders and got the All Blacks on the front foot before finishing nicely after the break. 7 13 Billy Proctor: Another underwhelming display from the centre, who continues to struggle to make the step up from Super Rugby. Dropped the ball a few metres out from the line, which summed up his performance before he went off injured early in the second half. 4 12 Anton Lienert-Brown: Another player that didn’t help his Test chances initially after getting sin-binned for a dangerous tackle. It is not the first time Lienert-Brown has been penalised for a high shot either, so it is something he needs to sort out. Outside of that, there were some nice hands in the midfield which kept the tempo high before he really came to the fore after the interval. 7 11 Rieko Ioane: Making a return after missing out on the July Tests, there were moments of quality from Ioane, who looked more explosive than he has been. Still not perfect and, again, he is not reliable aerially, but it was much better. 7 Didn’t take his chance 10 Beauden Barrett: All eyes were on the All Blacks legend, who was making his first appearance under Rennie, but it ended up being a poor evening for the centurion. There was some nice work with ball-in-hand with the tourists looking fluid at times, but he struggled in the air and made a couple of poor errors which will not have helped his Test chances. Ultimately, he failed his audition. 4 9 Cortez Ratima: There has been a clear gap between Cam Roigard and his scrum-half rivals, but this display might have closed it slightly. Ratima provided tempo from the base, kicked better than he has been, while also being a threat around the fringes. 8 8 Peter Lakai: Signalled his intent with a fine break through the heart of the Stormers defence early on but that was his best moment of the game until the final 10 minutes when he made a key breakdown steal and stunning break and off-load to create the match-sealing score for Carter. 8 7 Anton Segner: Continues to impress during his time in a black jersey and is the sort of player who Rennie loves. Hard-nosed, abrasive and with the skills to match. Did some great work at close quarters by often getting over the gain line, while he was effective in defence. 8 6 Simon Parker: Like Lienert-Brown, he blotted his copybook with a yellow card but, unlike the centre, he didn’t do enough to end in credit. Wasn’t nearly as busy as his back-row partners. 4 Stormers player ratings: Veteran Springboks star ‘the shining light’ in All Blacks defeat 5 Patrick Tuipulotu (c): Was physical but in some ways met his match against a Stormers side who were just as intense. It was a solid effort from Tuipulotu, but the lock wasn’t as imposing as he was against Ireland. 6 Incredible return 4 Fabian Holland: A quite remarkable performance considering this was his first match of the year. Missed the whole of Super Rugby Pacific and then the Nations Championship but it looked like he hadn’t been away. Mammoth work ethic with some key interventions at the lineout and deft touches in the loose. Has very much put himself in contention for the first Test. 8 3 Pasilio Tosi: Was technically exposed by the Stormers as he gave away a series of penalties due to his feet being too far back at the set-piece. Will be lucky to make the Test 23 on this evidence. 4 2 Samisoni Taukei’aho: Set-piece was smooth, and Taukei’aho also made some big impacts on both sides of the ball. That included one huge defensive hit and some fine surges with ball in hand. 7 1 George Bower: A solid shift from the loosehead with the problems all on the tighthead side. A reliable presence up front, but the All Blacks will need more if they are to handle the power of the Springboks scrum. 6 Replacements: While the starting front-row struggled, the replacements were not much better as Siale Lauaki struggled on debut.
