The 48-year-old said the decision to leave the Lions had been difficult after enjoying the opportunity to work with some of the country's leading young players. Flintoff expressed particular pride in helping emerging cricketers develop during his time with the programme and thanked the coaching and support staff who worked alongside him. He also highlighted England men's performance director Ed Barney and managing director Rob Key for their support during his tenure. Flintoff will now turn his attention towards Sydney Thunder and the next stage of his coaching career in the Big Bash League. His Lions role formed part of an increasingly prominent coaching career following his return to professional cricket. Flintoff has also worked with England's senior white-ball teams and was part of the backroom staff at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He has additionally coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, adding domestic franchise experience to his work within the England pathway. Barney praised Flintoff's contribution to the Lions, crediting him with helping transform the environment and creating a programme capable of both supporting and challenging England's emerging players.
