The purpose of the preseason is really to assess players that likely won't get much time on the field to see how they fit and also look at roster holes that need filling, especially on depth. So, the preseason is valuable, even if it seems like you're watching games that mean literally nothing. These games do mean something, and for the 49ers, their preseason may have uncovered a problem to solve. 49ers' depth concerns could spell trouble for Brock Purdy On Saturday, ESPN's Nick Wagoner explained why the 49ers have a concern, and it could impact Brock Purdy. One of the concerns out of the preseason is the receiver depth, and that could impact Purdy if the 49ers don't have enough reliable options around him. In the piece, he questions the team's receiver and guard depth charts. "The battle for receiver roster spots has been hard to decipher, but Jacob Cowing helped his cause significantly Thursday night due to his special teams contributions," he notes, adding that thanks to Cowing returning a punt 83 yards for a score and the reality that he's a reliable player, he'll likely get a spot on the initial 53-man roster. "Elsewhere, it's still unclear whether the Niners have a starting-caliber left guard, with rookie Carver Willis getting the start against the Chargers," he adds. "Willis, Connor Colby and Robert Jones have been competing for that spot, but none of them has done enough to separate from the others. Austen Pleasants also entered the mix Thursday, creating more questions at the position." So, it would help the 49ers, and Purdy, to get this depth chart a bit stronger before the season starts.
