Dundee United is delighted to announce the signing of Romanian international Kevin Ciubotaru from Superliga side FC Hermannstadt. Ciubotaru has, subject to SFA and international clearance, penned a two-year deal at the Calforth Construction Arena at Tannadice Park with the club holding an option of a further year. The 22-year-old left-back arrives at Tannadice following an impressive spell in Romania’s top flight and adds further quality and competition to Jim Goodwin’s defensive ranks. Born in Italy to Romanian parents, the young defender’s journey took him to Italy and Austria which included a stint with Austrian giants Rapid Vienna. A move to England followed in 2022 where Kevin attended Kinetic Academy, whose graduates include Joe Aribo and Josh Maja amongst others. Whilst with the academy, Ciubotaru attended trials at some of England’s biggest sides before eventually opting to head for his now first stint in Scotland, joining Rangers in the summer of 2022. Following a year at Ibrox, Kevin switched to Romanian side FC Hermannstadt on a three-year deal. A productive loan in the 2024/25 season with Liga 2 side Unirea Ungheni gave the defender the platform to mount a successful season with his parent club last campaign as he notched 39 appearances for Hermannstadt. Ciubotaru also made his senior debut for the Romania national team in October 2025 against Moldova and heads to the City of Discovery looking to keep progressing in his footballing journey. AN EXCITING YOUNG PROSPECT On securing his 11th summer signing, Jim Goodwin spoke of his delight at securing Kevin’s services. “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin to the football club and look forward to getting to work with him,” Goodwin said. “He’s an exciting young fullback who will add real quality to our defensive options and I’m thrilled he’s chosen to join us. “He had a real breakthrough season last campaign and played close to 40 games in the Romanian top flight whilst also earning his first senior cap, so we feel he’s joining the group with valuable experience in senior football and a real desire to improve and learn every day which is an important attribute. “I’m really looking forward to working with Kevin in this next stage of his career and seeing how he progresses in a Dundee United shirt.” A FRESH START IN TANGERINE On his summer move to the City of Discovery, Kevin said: “I’m so happy to be here and I can’t wait to meet the fans, my teammates and all the coaching staff. “As soon as I heard of the interest, it was a move I wanted to make. I’ve lived in Scotland before and having the opportunity to come to this massive club was one I couldn’t pass up. “Speaking with the manager was really positive and hearing about the plans and ambitions for the season ahead made the decision even easier. “I’m looking forward to getting started with all the lads and cannot wait to meet all the fans soon.” Kevin will wear the number 19 shirt with a full interview available shortly.
