Richie Myler has admitted that some players contracted for 2027 will not be at Hull FC next year with the club’s chief executive officer hinting at a massive overhaul this off-season.
Hull FC have already been among the more active clubs when recruiting for 2027, or at least in terms of announcing their done deals. The headliner is NRL legend Daly Cherry-Evans but they have also added Leigh Leopards pair Bailey Hodgson and Isaac Liu, as well as signing Catalans’ Alrix Da Costa, who will reunite with Steve McNamara.
Whilst Cherry-Evans and Liu are 37 and 35 respectively, Myler has made it clear that the majority of signings to come will be for players in their 20s, speaking in depth as he provided an update to BBC Radio Humberside.
Myler admitted: “The majority of our signings will be on those mid-20s, early-20s players. That’s what we’re looking to recruit, very talented with lots of development in them but we knew we had to get a few key points, a few signs around them.”
Asked how many more pieces there were to add to the puzzle, Myler responded: “How long have you got? There’s quite a lot of movement that’s going to happen in the next period of time.
“Some lads’ contracts are ending with us and they’ll be moving on to pastures new anyway or some that are under contract that will be changing.”
That clearly suggests player exits but Myler admitted that may be necessary, adding:”Obviously, we need to evolve that squad because we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to compete next year at a higher level than what we’ve done consistently this year.
“As annoying it is, we’re not a million miles off, although we’re not where we need to be. If you look at our points difference, we’re in every game, we’re just unfortunately not quite able to do it enough.”
Whilst his suggestion that Hull FC are ‘not a million miles off’ may shock many given that they’re joint-bottom for points, the club have lost seven Super League games by one score or less, with a further five defeats coming by just 10 points or less.
Adding the experience of DCE and Liu with developing players underneath could easily lead to a turn in fortunes for a club who have not made the play-offs since 2020.
