The Anaheim Ducks sign Cruz Lucius to a two-year entry-level contract, the team announced on August 20, 2026, one day after acquiring his signing rights from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for future considerations. The trade and subsequent signing were confirmed through Anaheim’s official channels and NHL.com, which reported the transaction directly. Terms of the entry-level deal, including AAV, were not disclosed.
Ducks Sign Cruz Lucius to Entry-Level Contract
Lucius, a 22-year-old right wing from Lawrence, Kansas, was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round, 124th overall, at the 2022 NHL Draft. Carolina later included him in the package that sent Jake Guentzel and Ty Smith to the Hurricanes on March 7, 2024, with Lucius, Michael Bunting, Vasily Ponomarev, Ville Koivunen, a conditional first-round pick, and a conditional fifth-round pick going the other way to Pittsburgh. Tuesday’s trade sent his rights from the Penguins to Anaheim in exchange for the infamous “future considerations”, closing out a college career that made him one of the more productive free agents available this off-season.

Anaheim’s social media team had some fun with the return package, posting a mock farewell to the ubiquitous trade throwaway itself: “Mr. Considerations, you were a joy to work with during your time with us. Best of luck to you in Pittsburgh.”
Why the Ducks Sign Cruz Lucius Now
Anaheim moved on Lucius almost immediately after landing his rights, a sign the organization views him as more than a depth flier. He had completed his NCAA eligibility, which meant his rights would have reverted toward unrestricted free agency once he filed the paperwork to formally leave school, giving Pittsburgh little reason to hold on and Anaheim a low-cost window to move first. Locking him to an entry-level deal within 24 hours of the trade suggests the Ducks had already done their evaluation work and were not interested in letting his market develop further.
Lucius’s Path to the NHL
Lucius spent four seasons in the NCAA, split between Wisconsin and Arizona State, finishing with 41 goals and 83 assists for 124 points across 125 games. He put together his best season in 2025-26 at Arizona State, posting 15 goals and 31 assists for 46 points in 36 games while leading the NCHC in assists per game. That production earned him a spot on the NCHC First All-Star Team and a Hobey Baker Memorial Award nomination. Lucius’s ceiling showed up in flashes throughout the year, including a career-high five-point game against Omaha on February 21, 2026.
Before his NCAA career, Lucius played two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program and represented the United States internationally, winning a silver medal at the 2022 U-18 World Championship and competing at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games. Full career and draft details are available on his official NHL.com player page.
What It Means for Anaheim
Lucius joins a Ducks organization that has continued adding to its forward pipeline through the trade and free-agent market rather than relying solely on the draft. His playmaking ability, evidenced by his conference-leading assist rate this past season, gives Anaheim another offensive option to develop within its prospect system as he transitions from NCAA competition to professional hockey. The acquisition also echoes general manager Pat Verbeek‘s trade for Cutter Gauthier, who joined the Ducks after it became clear he would not sign with the Philadelphia Flyers. Like Gauthier, Lucius carries Hobey Baker recognition from his college career, giving Anaheim another accomplished NCAA product to fold into its development pipeline.

Where he begins his professional career, whether with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls or in an NHL training camp look, will become clearer as Anaheim’s roster takes shape heading into the 2026-27 season. For now, the Ducks sign Cruz Lucius as a low-cost, high-upside bet on a player who was one of the most productive point producers in NCAA hockey a season ago.
