Man Utd player ratings vs Hull: Bruno Fernandes goes missing as two 2/10s stink it up Express Sport hands out player ratings after the Red Devils' first match of the season. Michael Carrick's Manchester United side suffered a nightmarish start to the Premier League season by losing 2-0 away to Hull City. Having been tipped as an outsider to challenge for the title, it was the Championship play-off winners who showed the most quality throughout the 90 minutes, with Carrick's side asked plenty of questions. It got off to a shocking start for the visitors when Semi Ajayi tapped home into an empty net after just 17 minutes to send Hull into dreamland. Senne Lammens had pulled off a stunning save to deny Oli McBurnie, but the ball fell straight to Ajayi, who made no mistake. Set pieces continued to cause United problems, and that's how Hull found their second goal, when Nobel Mendy headed home Regan Slater's whipped cross just before the half-time break. With a lead they wouldn't have even dreamt of before the match, it was no surprise to see the Tigers retreat following the restart. Marcus Rashford was introduced to the fold and did look lively, while Bryan Mbeumo fluffed a golden 1vs1 chance midway through the second half. But on the whole, United were blunted and were sent home (not on the train) with their tails between their legs. Express Sport hand out player ratings after United's opening match of the season... Senne Lammens - 7 The best United player on the pitch and that's saying something. Made some super sharp saves in the first half, and was quick off his line to deny a Hull breakaway in the second. Noussair Mazraoui - 5 It was a flip of a coin for the starting right-back spot between the Moroccan and Diogo Dalot. There can't be much rewriting of history over the selection, but the fact of the matter is, he just wasn't very good. Harry Maguire - 4 At sixes and sevens for the opener, and appeared to be marking team-mate Andrey Santos instead of the Hull attackers. It's hard to imagine he'll play all that much football this season if this outing is anything to go by. Looked better up front. Ayden Heaven - 3 By far the worst culprit for the first Hull goal, and there were plenty of candidates. His positional awareness was laughable, and overall it was a shambolic outing for the youngster. Luke Shaw - 4 It's not hard to see why United are so desperate to get a left-back into the side before the September 1 deadline. The Englishman was abysmal in the first half, but did link up better with Marcus Rashford following his compatriot's introduction. Andrey Santos - 3 Went missing for the opening goal and went missing for the majority of the match thereafter. The warning signs were there from the AC Milan pre-season defeat that he didn't work well in a midfield pivot with Youri Tielemans, and that was clear once again. Youri Tielemans - 2 You've heard of the saying 'everything he touches turns to gold', well, the Belgian was the opposite. Everything he touched turned to concrete, and judging by his weight of pass, you'd be mistaken for thinking the former Aston Villa man had steel-toe caps in his boots. Bruno Fernandes - 3 So often the man to drag United out of the mire, but just when their talisman needed him most, the Portuguese midfielder was unable to influence the game. He'll have to get so much better if United want to do anything useful this season. Patrick Dorgu - 2 If ever there was a performance that forces a club into the transfer market, it was this. A truly dismal showing on the left wing from the Dane, who spent his 45 minutes on the pitch looking like Bambi on ice. Matheus Cunha - 4 Went missing as the centre-forward and benefitted from a change in position. Played a lovely pass through the middle for team-mate Bryan Mbeumo, whose finish let him down. Was perhaps a surprise to see him subbed so early. Bryan Mbeumo - 5 Certainly grew into the game and looked the United attacker most likely of doing something. The Cameroon international had ghosted in the first half, but saved some face with his showing in the second. Substitutes: Marcus Rashford - 5 Was a tenfold improvement to what United had on the left-hand side throughout the first half. The returning forward actually attempted to take on his man and looked threatening on occasion. Rustiness was probably his biggest issue. Kobbie Mainoo - 4 Might've felt a bit hard done by not to start the match, given how impressive he'd been towards the end of the season. Didn't do much after his introduction, though. Benjamin Sesko - 3 Can be given the benefit of the doubt because he didn't play a minute in pre-season, but that's the only thing separating him from scoring one out of 10 instead. A waste of space at the top of the pitch. Diogo Dalot - 5 Did add an extra option on the right-hand side for United after Noussair Mazraoui offered very little. Shea Lacey - 5 Thrown straight into the deep end, but didn't do much.
