The Washington Commanders are continuing the preseason with a road matchup against the Detroit Lions. Even though it's the preseason, there's plenty of juice surrounding the Commanders at Ford Field. We get to see Jayden Daniels for the first time in a game scenario, and most of the starters will get some action. 12:12 p.m. Well, it didn't take long for the defense to show that they're a different unit from a year ago. Amik Robertson laid out Josh Dobbs for a sack that knocked the ball loose, and Joshua Josephs recovered the fumble in the end zone for the score. How about that for a tone-setter? 12:17 p.m. And we have another interception! This time, it's Quan Martin with the interception -- his second of the preseason. Just an absolutely fantastic start for the defense. 12:22 p.m. Three-and-out from the Commanders' offense. The Lions brought pressure and sacked Jayden Daniels on the second play. Tress Way pins Detroit at the 10. 12:30 p.m. Josh Dobbs touchdown. The defense got fooled on a read option and he ran 50 yards for the score. The score is tied, 7-7. It will be curious to see if the Commanders send out their starting offense for another series. 12:35 p.m. Sam Hartman is in at quarterback. Jayden Daniels' day (and likely preseason action) is over. 12:43 p.m. That's it for the defense. There was some exciting stuff from the defense, which looks more energetic and physical compared to last year. The starting offense's one series didn't end well, but there wasn't much to glean from the three-and-out. 1:37 p.m. We might have just seen the catch of the game from Jaden Bradley. He made a one-handed snag through contact to get the offense near midfield. It's hard to see how Bradley makes the roster, but it's clear he has given effort on every opportunity. 12:52 p.m. How about that from Javontae Jean-Baptiste? Great rush on the play to get the sack. He's had a great camp so far. 1 p.m. The Commanders are punting again, but Athan Kaliakmanis has looked impressive over the last two preseason games. He looks comfortable in the pocket, and while he's not the most mobile player, he knows how to maneuver and avoid pressure. 1:13 p.m. Missed 55-yard field goal from Jake Bakes. Here comes the Commanders' offense. Hopefully we get a good two-minute look from the unit before heading into the locker room. They get the ball the start the third quarter. 1:21 p.m. We're done with the first half, and the spotlight has to go to the defense, which dominated in the first 30 minutes. They already had four sacks and two turnovers, highlighting how different the unit is compared to last season. The offense, however, needs to pick things up. They get the ball to start the second half, so expect them to come out swinging. 1:46 p.m. Drew Stevens gets a chip-shot field goal to put the Commanders up by three. We saw some good stuff from the rookies on that drive, including Kaliakmanis. It's 10-7 Commanders after that 11-play drive. 1:56 p.m. The Commanders are doing a lot of alternating at quarterback. Hartman is back on the field. They're really giving both of them a lot of looks. 2:12 p.m. Touchdown Detroit. Trayveon Williams runs it in from one yard out to give the Lions the lead. It's 14-10 after the seven-play drive. 3 p.m. That's a wrap on the second preseason game, which ended in a 17-13 loss for the Commanders. It was a more difficult test for the roster, but there were some positive signs from the defensive starters and some of the reserve offensive players. The Commanders will face the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason finale with a joint practice before their game on Friday.
