Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has given an update on the future of Lucas Bergvall. After back-to-back seasons finishing 17th in the table, something has to give at Tottenham Hotspur. The hierarchy in N17 have now invested heavily to overhaul the squad that Roberto De Zerbi inherited in April. While the team might do well under the Italian’s watchful eyes, the squad still isn’t safe from scrutiny. There is uncertainty surrounding the futures of some players heading into the 2026/27 season. Pape Matar Sarr has been attracting interest from Galatasaray and Aston Villa. Galatasaray have already had an opening bid rejected for Sarr, who has fallen down the midfield pecking order after the big-money arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Lucas Bergvall is also facing the same scenario. Both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are among the clubs to have expressed interest in the 20-year-old after he expressed his desire to leave for greener pastures. The Premier League duo have also seen bids rebuffed for the player by the Tottenham board. Sandro Tonali, his new teammate, also called the youngster a “top player”. In his press conference, De Zerbi was asked whether he could guarantee that Bergvall would be at the club after the September 1 transfer deadline. To which he responded (h/t The Standard). “Lucas Bergvall, 100 per cent. We spoke a lot in pre-season. He’s a top player with top potential player. “I think now that he wants to stay and we have no problem.” Bergvall staying at Tottenham Bergvall’s desire to seek greener pastures stems from a growing concern over his possible playing time at White Hart Lane. Amid an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, the Swede was limited to just 11 Premier League starts. One would imagine those numbers could dip further in the upcoming season following the additions of Tonali and Fernandes to Tottenham’s engine room. The uncertainty clouding the future of the youngster opened the doors for Newcastle and Forest to make advances. However, the Spurs chiefs rejected all incoming proposals, signalling their commitment to the Stockholm-born prodigy. Given how the North London club fought off Barcelona to sign Bergvall in February 2024, it would be a grave mistake to give up on him after just two years. After fruitful discussions with Bergvall and his entourage internally, De Zerbi confidently stated in his press conference that the versatile midfielder will “100 per cent” stay at the club.
