Despite the season starting tomorrow evening against Torino, the former AC Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini still can’t pin down the team, believing that a certain foundation is missing. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, the former Rossoneri captain Massimo Ambrosini was asked about the season as a whole. Below are the comments that relate to his former club, stating that they still have a lot to fix. The season is starting. What are your feelings? “I’m pumped, excited, and curious every time the season starts. I feel privileged to still be able to experience stadiums and football up close.” Italian champions Inter will kick things off today against Monza. Are they still the team to beat? “Absolutely. In fact, with the signings of Stones, Spence, and Curtis Jones, the gap with the others has perhaps even widened.” Who do we put behind Inter? “Based on the quality of their squad, I think Napoli.” For a Napoli side that hasn’t changed much, there’s a Milan that, at least in words, want to revolutionise… “Yes, Amorim’s intention seems to be to move the team 20 or 30 meters forward, and we have already seen some of that. But I’m still struggling to pinpoint Milan: they have so many unresolved situations, first and foremost the Leao issue, who remains the strongest player in the squad, but is on the market.” Cardinale has spent a lot… “He’s putting his face on the line, there’s no doubt about it. And Ramos is a good centre-forward, he will help a lot.” What doesn’t convince you? “Unlike Inter, Milan lack a strong historical foundation. It’s a good thing that Modric stayed, but certain incidents, like the extra days off given to Maignan and Rabiot or the captain’s absence from Baresi’s funeral, speak volumes and leave me perplexed.” Two of your friends, Abate and Aquilani, are making their Serie A debuts as managers… “Ignazio is in a more established position at Torino and will perhaps have fewer difficulties. Alberto, on the other hand, arrives at a Sassuolo team that no longer has Carnevali and has lost some key players. Abate and Aquilani deserve support for the great passion they have always shown.” Abate, as said, will be the first opponent for Milan and that makes it a very special game. The 39-year-old was the Rossoneri’s Primavera coach before he left to join Ternana in Serie C, following a disagreement with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
