Man United make last-minute Marcus Rashford announcement after programme confusion
Marcus Rashford was given Manchester United's No.9 shirt after being listed without a squad number on the matchday programme for the trip to Hull.
But the 28-year-old was unable to inspire his side to victory after coming off the bench in the Red Devils' shock 2-0 defeat at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.
Returning to the United set-up following his season-long loan at Barcelona, Rashford was named amongst the substitutes for the clash in Yorkshire.
And it was the forward who boss Michael Carrick turned to at half-time with his side trailing two goals at the break.
Having seen his No.10 jersey given to Matheus Cunha last summer, the England international was bizarrely the only Manchester United player listed without a number on the match programme’s squad list.
The mishap appears to show that the final say on Rashford’s shirt number was a late decision that was taken after the programme went to print.
And while he wore the No.9 shirt in last weekend's pre-season defeat to AC Milan, it had been thought he would take the vacant No.14 - the number he wore during his time in Catalonia.
What number will Marcus Rashford wear for Man United this season?
But just two hours before their season-opening loss, the club finally announced its official list of squad numbers for the upcoming campaign, confirming that Rashford will don the No.9 shirt.
The former Aston Villa loan star then came on for the second half in what was his first competitive outing for United since December 2024.
And while his introduction ultimately failed to spark a comeback for the visitors, he was their brightest spark in what was a disastrous day for United.
In what was a truly nightmare day for supporters, who were already facing a bleak journey home, an announcement over the tannoy at the MKK Stadium informed them that the 15.03 and 17.03 trains back to Manchester had been cancelled.
Speaking to talkSPORT's Sam Matterface following the shock loss, Carrick was asked whether Rashford will remain at the Theatre of Dreams beyond the window.
United fans are already urging for Rashford to make a return to the line-up when Ipswich Town travel to Old Trafford next weekend.
And Carrick has declared he is 'delighted' to once again count on Rashford, as he played down the importance of him wearing the No.9.
Will Rashford be staying at United after transfer deadline day?
Carrick said: "He came on today and he done everything he could to try and make a difference for us,.
"Just because he's got the No.9, it doesn't really have a massive impact on whatever, he's got to wear some number.
"So we've been delighted to have him and he was trying things down the side with Luke [Shaw] today.
"Just couldn't quite find that moment for us, but, as I said, we're delighted to have him."
