And I was moved by opera the first time I heard “che gelida manina” at a Sam Goody listening station in the early 90’s, but I never learned Italian. On our long drives out to Montauk I would play all my favorite operas and have her tell me what the hell everyone was talking about, kind of like you just did. Probably would have married that one if not for the southern temper. Anger is human but meanness is something else entirely. In college I managed to catch an opera double feature of Soir Angelica and Gianni Schicci and I was surprised how moving I found the whole experience, I would love to go the opera again were there any within driving distance.
