Celtic defender Colby Donovan has opened up on his journey from ball boy to the Hoops starting XI. The young defender joined the Celtic academy in 2014 before making his first-team debut against Livingston last August in a 3-0 win. Speaking about his time at Celtic and his friends being at most games as part of the Bhoys ultras, Donovan admitted he is loving his extended run in the starting XI. He said (Daily Record): “Yeah, I ball boyed a few times, to be fair. I remember the one game, it was St Mirren at home. Celtic scored and I was up running like a daft man! “I was on the park at Motherwell away as well. Coming here on special nights like this, it’s what you dream, isn’t it? “Most of my pals are in the Bhoys (ultras) and all that. So I look up and I always see them. I’m loving it man, I’m loving it.” Donovan really is living the dream, going from Celtic fan to starring against LASK in the Champions League play-off. With Alistair Johnston injured and now out for an extended period, the young Celtic defender will be afforded more starts and game time, and he will hope this can be the beginning of the season where he breaks into the team week in, week out. In recent eras, Celtic simply haven’t had enough academy graduates in the first team, and it’s great to see Donovan breaking the mould and showing the passion and excitement young players who came through the ranks can bring.
