‘What’s between their ears’: Bennett’s typically dry response to glaring Rabbitohs question
Wayne Bennett was at his blunt best in his post-match press conference, saying his team needed to work on “what’s between their ears” after a 45-26 loss to the Warriors.
The Rabbitohs had a chance to lock in a finals spot with a win on Saturday evening and they came within six points of a monumental comeback, trailing 26-8 at halftime.
However, South Sydney will have to wait another week to secure their spot in the top eight and Bennett was dry as a bone when asked if he could “sum up” the game.

“Not really,” Bennett responded, before being pressed on what his side needed to improve.
“What’s between their ears,” he said, before adding: “We were not real smart at different times out there”.
The question that peaked the master coach’s interest focused on the Rabbitohs’ effort and whether he was “proud” of his team’s resilience.
“I’m never disappointed with their effort, okay,” Bennett responded sharply.

However, Bennett was disappointed with his team’s execution, specifically in the first half which saw the Warriors score three times inside 32 minutes.
“Yeah well they picked up 26 points at halftime, four tries, they missed no kicks,” he said.
“Three of them came off our mistakes, yeah, so...”
A reporter pressed Bennett again on the areas he wanted to see improvement in to close out the season, and the Rabbitohs boss revealed he believed no team had “beaten us”.
“The same areas we’ve been after since the start of the season, just execution,” he said.
“I haven’t walked into a change room all year that we haven’t beaten ourselves, no team has beaten us, we have beaten ourselves which we did again tonight.

“We’ve got two weeks to get it right.”
“Yeah, we think he will be all right to play next week,” Bennett said.
Skipper Cameron Murray echoed his coach’s sentiment, heaping praise on the Warriors.
“Yeah they are, we knew we were going be in for a difficult night. Quality opposition,” Murray said.
“Good challenge for us, but when you give an opposition like that a little bit too much ball and opportunity they capitalise on it.
“So some good lessons in there for us today.”
As for the return of Latrell Mitchell, Bennett said: “Yeah, we think he will be all right to play next week.”
