LOS ANGELES — A great start to the high school football season, was marred by chaos at L.A. Southwest College, Friday. The San Pedro Pirates were in control thanks to key turnovers against the King/Drew Golden Eagles when players and staff were forced to rush for cover midway through the third quarter, moments after the Pirates took a 20-6 lead. Senior quarterback Seth Solario punched in a 1-yard run into the end zone seconds before the sound of what people thought was a gunshot near the athletic field house initiated the stampede of spectators rushing onto the field. “(Sherriffs) told us to escort behind the bleachers and they escorted (the players) on the bus,” San Pedro coach Corey Walsh said. “That’s the extent of it, I haven’t gotten to close things out for the night with my guys, we just made sure everyone was safe. “It’s a lame ending to the night but overall I thought we accomplished our number one objective which is to attack. I was really proud of them for that.” San Pedro athletic director Anthony Rogosic said that the result goes into the book as a San Pedro win. The Pirates offensive unit got started with eight consecutive running plays before an incomplete pass and a pair of Golden Eagles penalties prefaced four runs that ended in the endzone. A 6-yard run by senior running back MIchael Artiga was the finisher during an 80-yard touchdown drive that included some dynamic running by senior wide receiver Jaxon Brown. King/Drew junior quarterback Gerald Torres, a transfer from Baltimore, and senior wide receiver Giovanni Gaut showed chemistry in the first half with three completions – one a 20-yard catch for a first down. The first score of the season for the Golden Eagles came on the team’s third drive when Torres completed the ball six times to five different receivers. Junior wide receiver Jarr Muhamed made it to the end zone from the 38-yard line. “I thought we matched up well,” King/Drew coach Joe Torres said. “We’ll get better on special teams, get better on defense, and then we’ll get better on offense because I know we have all the weapons. “Our quarterback played really well. He had a lot of completions, a couple deep balls he missed but he also had a couple of deep balls he hit.” Torres added that he was happy going into halftime down just 7-6 and that the initial play to start the second half changed the game. Walsh called a pooch kick on the kickoff and the Pirates recovered. After a couple of running plays and some penalties, Solorio’s first completion ended in a 36-yard touchdown to make it 14-6 after the completed extra point. A fumble on the snap by King/Drew resulted in a turnover for San Pedro that started on the Golden Eagles’ 27 and went to the 1-yard line four plays later. Solario’s quarterback keeper into the endzone was short lived before chaos ensued – a situation which Torres claimed could result in the teams meeting again at a later date to finish the time on the clock. Next week, King/Drew travels to face Culver City while San Pedro hosts West Torrance.
