Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Liam Delap from Chelsea, who is expected to command at least £40million. United have plenty of work to get through before September 1st’s deadline. Included in our looming business is signing a new striker to compete with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and relieve some of the strain on him for a full campaign. Reports recently have claimed that Leeds are interested in signing Liam Delap from Chelsea. The Blues are wanting around £50million for the striker, while Leeds and other clubs believe a deal can be struck at £40million. Of course, that’s a lot of money to pay for a striker following of a terrible Premier League campaign. If anything, Leeds would be better served securing a more favourable loan for the Englishman. Here, I look at three strikers Leeds might be better off signing than Delap for such a fee… Igor Matanovic – Freiburg 6ft4in Croatian striker Igor Matanovic could be a name on Leeds’ shortlist to strengthen up front. We know that Daniel Farke likes dabbling in the Bundesliga for new signings. And, Matanovic would fit the profile of a target man United need up front. He bagged 11 goals in the Bundesliga last season. At the age of 23, he could be the sort of younger investment Leeds need. We want someone who can eventually take Calvert-Lewin’s place. Matanovic’s progression over in Germany suggests he could be that player. Jovon Makama – Norwich City Looking domestically, I fully expect Jovon Makama to be a Premier League player within the next 12-18 months. The Norwich City striker has endured a rocky pre-season due to injury, after his last season was cut short too by a setback. Red flags, of course, but perhaps someone who might be attainable for a more modest fee as a result. Another absolute giant at 6ft5in, Makama has shone under Philippe Clement and is rising towards being a future England striker if he continues. He’s perhaps a striker that needs more development at Championship level. However, he’s also someone that could very quickly become subject to a lot of interest in the top flight – Leeds’ task with recruitment is getting ahead of the curve to make millions in the future. Conrad Harder – RB Leipzig One of our pre-season opponents, RB Leipzig could have a solution for us in the final third. Despite only having two senior strikers on the books, Conrad Harder is being linked with a move away. The Danish international has been told in no uncertain terms that he can leave with playing time likely to be limited behind Romulo. He’s seen as a very high-intensity striker that would be able to lead the line as Calvert-Lewin’s competition in the Premier League. The issue is that Harder hasn’t yet found a prolific streak in front of goal. However, Leeds could sign a 21-year-old primed to explode in the right system, which Leeds found with Calvert-Lewin.
