Daredevils are preparing to take a leap from the roof of Huddersfield Town’s Accu Stadium in a fundraising challenge for the club’s official charity. The Huddersfield Town Foundation’s BIG ZIP Challenge will see participants travel across the stadium by zip wire, raising money for its work with people across Kirklees. The wire starts at the top of the Terriers Together stand, travels across the full length of the pitch and ends in the concourse of the Cowshed. Each participant has pledged to raise at least £150, with the money supporting the foundation’s health, wellbeing, education and community programmes. Among those taking part on Saturday is Alastair Morris, UK managing director of Huddersfield-based engineering components company Accu, which has naming rights for the stadium. And he admits heights are definitely not his thing. Alastair wrote on LinkedIn: “I don’t like heights. Never have. I only made it halfway up the Eiffel Tower. I hate going up ladders. I don’t even like being 6ft 2in tall! “So this is going WAY out of my comfort zone. “But the Huddersfield Town Foundation is a superb force in Kirklees, supporting many people to grow, thrive and belong. “So I’m plucking up all my courage to raise money for them, representing the awesome Accu team, by literally leaping off the roof of the Accu Stadium. “I genuinely might not pluck up the courage unless there’s a load of money riding on it!” Another participant, Lauren Popple, is also facing a fear of heights as well as challenging herself to overcome anxiety. She said: “I am absolutely petrified of heights and I suffer with quite bad anxiety, so this is pushing me in a few ways. “There’s so much negativity in the world at the moment. Let’s all come together and raise money for people who deserve it!” The challenge is sponsored by the foundation’s official health and wellbeing partner STADA Thornton & Ross. Lucy Summerton, fundraising and partnerships manager at Huddersfield Town Foundation, said: “The BIG ZIP Challenge is an incredible opportunity for people to do something truly memorable while supporting a cause that makes a real difference locally. “Participants will get to experience the Accu Stadium in a way that very few people ever have, while knowing that every pound they raise is helping to support individuals, families and communities across Kirklees. “We’re delighted to be bringing this challenge to Huddersfield and are incredibly grateful to STADA Thornton & Ross for their support.” Money raised will help the foundation continue programmes aimed at improving physical and mental wellbeing, supporting learning and bringing people together across the district.
