Alan Shearer not happy - Honest take on Bruno Guimaraes leaving Newcastle United
Alan Shearer has reacted to Bruno Gimaraes ditching Newcastle United to join Arsenal.
Alan Shearer is “disappointed” to see Bruno Guimaraes leave Newcastle United after kissing the club’s crest.
Perhaps more than anyone since the Saudi-backed takeover, the Brazilian adhered himself to the Toon faithful. Emotional interviews, chest pumps after tackles and declaring his love for Newcastle were commonplace during Guimaraes’ four-and-a-half-year spell.
However, after the Magpies finished 12th last season, the captain is now off. Guimaraes aims to win big silverware at Arsenal as he inches closer to a £75million move.
Alan Shearer reaction
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer admitted he thought better of Guimaraes. But the Newcastle legend understands why the midfielder would head to North London at this stage of his career.
“First of all, as a fan of Newcastle who has watched him for four or five years, I'm disappointed because I've seen him produce magical moments,” Shearer said. “ I've seen how brilliant he is (and) how he can make a difference to the team. I've seen him kiss the badge. I've seen him react to the crowd. I've seen him be made captain. And I've heard him say how much he loves the club.
“From a professional point of view, and from someone who works in football and knows how the game is, I totally get it. He's 29 in a couple of months. He's going to the champions. Last week, he saw his manager Eddie Howe leave. He saw Alexander Isak leave last summer then this summer he saw Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali sold. Newcastle is a very different football club to the one it was 12 or 18 months ago.
“If someone wants to leave then let them go. Bruno hasn't done it in the wrong way, he's done it the right way. We didn't like what Yoane Wissa was doing at Brentford last summer and we didn't like what Isak was doing at Newcastle.
“Every time he put on a black and white shirt, you could never complain about his attitude and professionalism. So with my professional head on, I understand why he wants to move to the champions.”
‘Hurt’ - Alan Shearer
Shearer also believes Guimaraes leaving will hurt in a similar fashion to Alexander Isak’s controversial exit last year. However, the same sentiment was not given to Sandro Tonali or Anthony Gordon.
“The Tonali deal was a very good one for Newcastle,” Shearer added. “He's a good player but he's not a £100million player. The deal for Anthony Gordon was a good one because he hadn't played well in the league.
“Tonali hadn't played well in the league. Losing Isak last summer hurt, obviously. And Bruno will hurt because he's a very, very good player. Eddie Howe was a brilliant manager and once he had left, Bruno was then done.
“He had the perfect excuse to say ‘That's me out’. Now whether he would have left if Howe had stayed, my guess is Bruno would have gone anyway. But once Eddie had left, the writing was on the wall.”
