Ryan Erisman was absolutely on fire during last week’s U.S. National Championships in Irvine. The 19-year-old Cal Golden Bear was the most decorated male swimmer at the meet with three individual titles, and he saved his best for last in the 800 freestyle. Going head-to-head with 400 free winner Luka Mijatovic and 1500 champion William Mulgrew, Erisman, who won the 200 free earlier in the meet, sat back in third place at the halfway mark, and by the 600 turn, Mulgrew had opened up a lead of more than a second. Then, Erisman turned on the jets. He split 28.83/28.73 over the seventh 100, pulling within two one-hundredths of Mulgrew, and then he exploded over the final two lengths, coming home in 27.83/26.96 to book a decisive win.
