Who Will Face Roman Reigns in Mexico City? Predicting 8 Luchadors in WWE Heavyweight Title Match Tournament

This week brought some interesting news when it comes to the upcoming plans for WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns.
Monday’s edition of RAW ended with Hall of Famer and current AAA general manager Rey Mysterio asking Reigns for a few minutes of his time to talk about his work with the Mexican promotion. It was then revealed on Tuesday that the heavyweight champ will face the winner of a tournament in a title match at a September episode of RAW in Mexico City.
The participants in the tourney will be “luchadors” from RAW, SmackDown and AAA. So who could those men be? We look to answer that question with our predictions for who will be in a likely eight-man tournament.
Rey Fenix
There is no doubt that SmackDown star Rey Fenix will be a part of the planned tournament. He is one of the purest luchadors on WWE’s roster, and he deserves and needs an opportunity to showcase his skills over the next month.
Making his inclusion likely is his own public push this week to see his brother Penta face Reigns while he gets a bout with Undisputed WWE champ CM Punk at one of the major upcoming AAA events.
Mr. Iquana
Since WWE purchased the popular Mexican wrestling promotion last year, Mr. Iquana has become one of WWE management’s favorite stars. He has an entertaining gimmick with his sidekick La Yezca, and that helps to make him a merchandise-selling machine.
He won’t end up getting an opportunity against Reigns, but as one of AAA’s most well-known performers, he is a lock to be in the tournament.
El Grande Americano
Rumors this week suggested that WWE talent turned AAA fan-favorite, El Grande Americano, will be Reigns’ opponent in Mexico City. And that would make sense. Since Ludwig Kaiser took over the moniker of El Grande Americano, he has put in the work to win over Mexican fans. He has done that successfully and is now the brand’s most popular performer.
The crowd in Mexico City being firmly behind their new favorite star as he faces Reigns could create one of the best moments in WWE this year.
El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.
The moniker of Dr. Wagner is one of the most prestigious in AAA. And the man currently under the mask, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., is one of the brand’s top stars. He has even made a few appearances on WWE television over the last year. Several AAA performers are sure to be in the tournament, and the son of Dr. Wagner Jr. is a lock to be one of them.
Penta
For many long-time wrestling fans, a matchup between Roman Reigns and Penta is something they have wanted to see for years, because it would be a clash of styles that could deliver a very entertaining bout. And the former Intercontinental Champion should be viewed as a favorite to win the tournament.
If WWE wants to test out Penta’s potential as a main event player, dipping their toe in those waters with an unexpected matchup with Reigns would be an easy way to do that.
La Parka
Long-time wrestling fans remember La Parka from his days in WCW’s cruiserweight division. Well, the moniker is still being worn by a different performer in AAA right now. That performer has also made appearances in WWE and is a featured part of the company’s content. It would be surprising if La Parka is not in the tournament to face Reigns in Sept.
Dominik Mysterio
Can you really have a tournament to pick a challenger to the World Heavyweight King without the “King of the Luchadores?” That is why you can bet current AAA champ, Dominik Mysterio, will land in the tourney bracket. However, Mysterio is unlikely to win the tournament. He will be added to bring a big-name star to the tourney, and it would not be surprising if he ends up in the final.
Axiom
One of the best under-the-radar luchadors on WWE’s roster is SmackDown tag team specialist Axiom. While he is not of Mexican descent or has connections to AAA, the masked Spanish star was clearly influenced by lucha wrestling.
Like Fenix, the former NXT tag champion deserves and needs a chance to be showcased on WWE TV. This would be the perfect way to do that without setting up a storyline reason.
