The Ukrainian side have been unable to play at the Donbas Arena since Russia annexed the Donetsk region in 2014, requiring Shakhtar to stage domestic matches in Kyiv and Lviv, alongside European fixtures in Germany, Slovenia and Poland. While the change of venue remains subject to regulatory approvals, Chelsea—who failed to qualify for European competition last season—hope to offer Shakhtar and their travelling supporters a warm welcome to west London. "Shakhtar have played in countries across Europe and we look forward to welcoming them to London for their Champions League campaign this year," Chelsea said in an official statement. "We will be working with the Shakhtar team closely over the coming weeks to ensure that matchdays run safely and smoothly for their team and supporters." Shakhtar welcomed the arrangement. Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League themselves after they finished 10th in the Premier League last season. With new manager Xabi Alonso now at the helm, the Blues are due to get their Premier League campaign underway on Monday night when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage in a London derby.
