Manchester United could be heading for a hectic end to the summer transfer window. Devaney is a defensive midfielder by trade and made 18 appearances during his first loan spell. He completed an impressive 92% of his passes and averaged nearly six recoveries per 90 minutes. He was part of the pre-season squad under head coach Michael Carrick and played against Wrexham and Rosenborg. With Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez unavailable, Carrick experimented by deploying Devaney at centre-back. The Ireland youth international remains one of United’s more intriguing academy talents, although his development has largely flown under the radar. His work rate, and composure give him several qualities that could eventually make him a useful option for the senior squad. However, regular first-team football is now crucial to his development, and another loan spell could provide exactly the platform he needs. A return to Scotland would also make sense given Devaney’s familiarity with the league and the success he enjoyed during his previous spell.
