Tottenham have just agreed a £75 million deal with Manchester City for Savinho, with a further £10m potentially available in add-ons. The Brazilian is due to undergo a medical before completing the move. And that immediately raises an interesting question for Liverpool supporters: If Savinho is worth £75m, how much should Cody Gakpo be worth? For me, Liverpool should be looking at this deal very closely. Gakpo is arguably worth more Cody Gakpo isn’t simply a promising winger. He’s a proven Premier League player, a Netherlands international and a player who has already played a major role in a Liverpool title-winning side. He can play on the left. He can play through the middle. He can lead the line. And he has shown that he can produce goals and assists at the highest level. So when Tottenham are prepared to spend £75m on Savinho, it is difficult to argue that Gakpo should be available for anything close to a bargain price. Tottenham already want Gakpo This makes the Savinho deal even more interesting. Tottenham have been interested in Gakpo as Roberto De Zerbi looks to strengthen his attack. Liverpool, however, have made it clear that they aren’t looking to sell him cheaply and would want a replacement before considering his departure. Now Spurs have spent £75m on Savinho. That doesn’t necessarily mean their interest in Gakpo disappears. But it certainly changes the financial landscape. If Tottenham come back for Gakpo, Liverpool should be pointing straight towards the Savinho deal. £75m is the starting point. Liverpool shouldn’t want to sell There’s another reason I wouldn’t want Liverpool to let Gakpo leave. He’s incredibly useful to Iraola. Liverpool are already trying to build greater depth in attack, with the club pursuing players such as Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh. Selling Gakpo would simply create another problem. And even if Liverpool received £70m or £80m, they’d then have to spend a significant portion of that money trying to replace him. Why create that problem? Gakpo offers something different Savinho is an exciting player. He’s quick, technically gifted and capable of creating something out of nothing. But Gakpo offers Liverpool something slightly different. He’s physically powerful. He’s excellent in the air. He’s capable of playing as a centre-forward. He can hold the ball up. And he has already demonstrated that he can perform in English football. That’s extremely valuable. So what is Gakpo actually worth? If I’m Liverpool, I’m putting a £90m valuation on Gakpo. Not because I necessarily expect Tottenham to pay that much. But because Liverpool don’t need to sell. Gakpo has four years remaining on his contract and Liverpool have no reason to weaken their squad unless the offer is impossible to refuse. And if Spurs really believe Gakpo is the player they need, then they should be prepared to pay a premium. After all, they’re about to spend £75m on Savinho. The Savinho deal could actually help Liverpool This is the interesting part. Tottenham’s agreement with City potentially gives Liverpool a useful benchmark. If Savinho is worth: £75m guaranteed + £10m add-ons then Liverpool can quite reasonably argue that Gakpo should command a similar — or higher — fee. He’s older, but he’s also far more proven in the Premier League. And that’s something Liverpool should value heavily. My valuation: £90m Would I sell Gakpo for £90m? I’d have to seriously consider it. But for £70m? Absolutely not. Liverpool are trying to build a squad capable of competing for four trophies. Gakpo is an important part of that squad. If Tottenham want him, they should pay accordingly. Savinho has just set a £75m benchmark. Now Liverpool can ask a very simple question: If Savinho is worth £75m, what is Cody Gakpo worth?
