Michael Owen raises eyebrows with Liverpool transfer advice over 'consistently poor' Cody Gakpo Michael Owen has offered Liverpool some clear transfer advice regarding the "consistently poor" Cody Gakpo, who keeps on being linked with a summer move to Tottenham Tottenham transfer interest in the Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo does not appear to be going anywhere this summer, even if the Reds are short of options in attack as things stand. Gakpo, who scored nine goals in all competitions last season, returned for pre-season at the AXA Training Centre last week. A couple of days ago, he was back in training with the group who returned from the US tour, alongside fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk. Roberto De Zerbi has already promised Spurs fans another "bomba" in the market before the September 1 deadline, with Gakpo one of the players that he would be keen to snap up should the opportunity arise. Michael Owen believes that Gakpo leaving Anfield could be a possibility this summer, but only if the Reds are able to sign a couple of forwards who could replace him. Bradley Barcola is the top target, while another PSG forward, Ibrahim Mbaye, is an option that is under consideration. The 18-year-old right winger is thought to be open to the switch. "Well, Gakpo was consistent last year, but consistently poor," Owen bluntly told Goal. "He had a good opening 10 games or something, but then for the rest of the season, he was pretty poor." The clamor for Rio Ngumoha to come in on the left flank increased throughout last season, though Arne Slot was right to limit his game time in a bid to manage his development. But under Andoni Iraola, things are unlikely to change if Ngumoha's trajectory continues in the same direction. "Gakpo has already proven that he can be very effective in the Liverpool team, but it was a concern, his performances last season," Owen continued. "It was a poor season. I don't think (Gakpo leaving is) an impossible one. I just think Liverpool are probably... if they lose him, they're already desperate for wide men. Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign. "If they lose him, are you going into the season relying on Rio Ngumoha? If you've got a replacement, then I can see it. "It could happen. At the moment, I think they're looking at adding; I'm not sure they're thinking of getting rid of too many players. "His season last year was not very good. However, he has proven over time that he is very good. That's an up in the air one." Liverpool.com says: Losing Gakpo at this stage of the summer would be impossible for the Reds. The focus, as Owen says, is getting more numbers in, not losing them. Should a couple of signings arrive, however, then maybe things could change. Even then, it would take a huge bid to prise him away.
