Former European middleweight champion Tyler Denny has done the hard yards. Now he’s ready to break out and become a factor in Zuffa Boxing’s 160-pound division.
Denny has made the short hop across the Irish Sea from England to take on undefeated Irish star Callum Walsh in the co-main event of Zuffa Boxing 10, which takes place Saturday night at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Denny is excited to be able to get out under the bright lights again and continue a career that looked like it might never get going. Denny started as an amateur hopeful who boxed in his spare time while holding down a job as a plumber, and it was only when a sponsor took a chance on him that his career finally got the boost it needed.
“Yeah, I had had a sponsor. I had a fight coming up against a guy, Derrick Osaze, and he was 10-0. I asked my sponsor, ‘Could you pay me to have a month off work so I can concentrate on this fight?’ and he did it, and I won.

“So, he phoned me after that, saying, ‘Ah, he's great. You should have a year off work … I’ll pay you.’ I asked work, and they said no. Then he came back to me and said, ‘Screw work! Get rid of them, I’ll just pay you and see how you get on.’ So, I quit my job, and I kept winning, and I’ve not picked up a tool since.”
Despite being an established pro with a string of victories on his record, Denny found it hard at times to get regular fights. Even as recently as last year, he said he took a small-hall fight for a meagre purse, just to stay active.

“No one owes you anything, so you’ve just got to wait around and hope that someone offers you a fight,” he explained. “For instance, at the end of last year, I ended up fighting on a local small little show, just to fight, because I had no fights coming up. Obviously, I never earned any money off it or anything. It was just for me to stay active. But it's quite amazing how many people it happens to, really, even when people have got contracts. So, it's not the be-all or end-all being a professional boxer sometimes.”
During those times, motivation can be hard, but Denny just kept showing up at the gym, working hard on his craft to make sure that, when the call did come, he’d be ready.
“Just take it day by day. Just keep turning up at the gym, trying to eat right to a certain level, because you have to be ready,” he said. “Say someone says, ‘Oh, you’ve got a fight in three weeks' time,’ and you need to be able to take it. So, you've got to be strong mentally, as well. I think that's half the battle. But take it day by day, and you'll get there.”
That patience earned him a high-profile domestic fight with rising prospect George Liddard at London’s Copper Box Arena, and while Denny found himself on the wrong end of the judges’ scorecards on the night, his competitive showing in a British and Commonwealth title fight showed that, even coming off a small-hall show, Denny had what it takes to deliver a performance in front of a big crowd.

That performance helped earn him the call from Zuffa Boxing, and the chance to take on Walsh in Dublin this weekend. It’s an opportunity Denny is excited to grab with both hands, and he’s excited to use his opponent’s rising profile to help build his own.
“Hopefully, [you’ll see] a good competitive win for me,” he stated. “I think it's gonna be a good fight. Obviously, he’s a good fighter, and there's a lot of hype around him. But there's a lot of hype around a lot of these fighters, d’you know what I mean? So, I'll put him to the test. I believe I've got what he takes to beat him.”
Denny’s willingness to say yes whenever he picks up the phone to a fight offer has seen him face a host of undefeated fighters over the years, and he has taken the 0 from six of them. The prospect of adding a seventh by defeating the highly touted Walsh in his home city is a mouthwatering prospect for the 35-year-old.
“I just get offered them!” he said. “I'd literally fight anyone, so when this fight got offered to me, I said yes straight away. I just want to fight. I love fighting, and if that ever leaves me, then I'd pack in the fighting. But, until then, you get offered an undefeated guy; he’s kind of the golden boy, and in his backyard in Dublin. That’s a bit of me, that is!”
Saturday's Full Fight Card Breakdown
The bout will see Denny step into the lion’s den at Dublin’s 3Arena, which has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most atmospheric indoor arenas in Europe for fight sports. The Irish fans passionately support their own, and Denny knows he’ll be on the receiving end from the fans in the stands. But he’s looking forward to drawing a very different sort of reaction from them as the bout unfolds.
“Yeah, I use it, because as loud as it can be, when I start punching him up, and then they're like, "Oooh, aaah,” I like that, as well,” he said. “It works both ways, doesn’t it? But I’m expecting a hostile atmosphere, definitely.”
A behind-enemy-lines victory over Walsh would immediately establish Denny as one to watch in Zuffa Boxing’s 160-pound division and open up the potential for the 28-fight vet to cross the pond to compete for the first time in his career.
“I'd like to fight in Vegas,” he said. “I've never even been to America, full stop. So, if I can go there on business and fight, that’d be a bit of me.
“But I try not to look past Saturday, otherwise I might be back in the small little shows again! I’ve just got to concentrate and get the job done Saturday. I just want to fight. It’s what I love doing.”
