New York Yankees Gerrit Cole added another milestone to his career Thursday night, moving ahead of Roger Clemens on the franchise's all-time strikeout leaderboard during a 6-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Cole finished with eight strikeouts, bringing his career total with New York to 1,015 and moving him past Clemens for 12th place on the Yankees' all-time strikeout list. The 35-year-old right-hander pitched six innings of one-run baseball, limiting Baltimore to four hits and one walk across 93 pitches. The only blemish on his day came on a solo home run off the bat of Dylan Beavers in the fifth inning. Cole otherwise kept the Orioles off the scoreboard while logging 15 swings and misses, including seven with his fastball, and recording a 35 percent CSW rate. The six-time All-Star was also consistently ahead in the count. He threw a first-pitch strike to 22 of the 23 batters he faced, continuing his recent success attacking hitters with his fastball, which reached 97 mph. The outing improved Cole's record to 7-6. He now carries a 3.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 100-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 92 2/3 innings. While the two-time MLB strikeout leader handled Baltimore, New York's offense built enough support to complete a three-game sweep. The Yankees scored three times in the third inning after an error by Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson helped extend the frame. Ben Rice followed with an RBI single, while Heliot Ramos lined a two-run double to make it 3-0. Luis García Jr. and Spencer Jones then hit back-to-back solo homers in the sixth, extending the advantage to 5-1. Jazz Chisholm Jr. added an RBI triple in the eighth. Ryan Yarbrough capped the victory by throwing three perfect innings, striking out three and facing the minimum nine batters. The sweep moved New York to 41-28 on the road, giving them the best road record among American League teams. The Yankees also pulled within four games of the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL East lead, while Baltimore dropped its fourth consecutive game.
