From Border War hits to Cardinals teammates: Wingard and McBride reunite
TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily)— The legendary “Border War” rivalry in college football has officially moved south to the desert, with safety Andrew “Dewey” Wingard signing with the Arizona Cardinals.
One of the Mountain West’s fiercest collegiate rivalries has been reunited under one roof. Wingard, a proud Wyoming Cowboy alumnus who racked up a conference-record 454 tackles, now shares a locker room with Cardinals star tight end and former Colorado State standout Trey McBride.
“It started when I was a demon at Wyoming and he spears me in the back after I made a tackle, so there was some bad blood there,” Wingard said.
While their college meetings on the gridiron meant heavy collisions and unmatched intensity over the Bronze Boot, both players were still battling up to last year.
“Last year he was mic’d up and I know I was saying some crazy things but thankfully, it was not aired,” Wingard said.
McBride has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier young tight ends, while Wingard brings eight years of seasoned NFL experience and a proven defensive pedigree from his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“It’s funny how things come full circle,” Wingard said of joining his former collegiate rival. “We used to beat each other up in college, but now I’m just glad Trey is on my side. He’s a special player, and I can’t wait to get to work.”
