Asked how he balances competing with his work behind the scenes trying to ensure LIV’s future prosperity, DeChambeau acknowledged the challenges facing the league. “Look, it’s tough, it’s not easy,” DeChambeau said. “We definitely have a lot against us, but I think behind the scenes we’ve got a lot of people that are working hard to make this possible for not only all the players that are out here, but all the fans that have come out to these events.” The two-time major champion pointed towards LIV’s events around the world, specifically mentioning South Africa, Indianapolis, Australia and the UK, as evidence of the impact the competition has made. DeChambeau said LIV’s players had a responsibility to continue demonstrating what the league could offer before making a striking admission about its uncertain future. “If it works, it works. Awesome, right? If it doesn’t, we’ll figure things out,” DeChambeau said. McIlroy offered a far more sceptical assessment this week when asked whether LIV players could provide value to the PGA Tour should more eventually return. “I’d argue, have they brought value to LIV?” McIlroy said. “I think the PGA Tour is in a really good spot.” It was a pointed response amid continued discussion around potential pathways back to the PGA Tour for LIV players following Brooks Koepka’s return earlier this year. Scheffler offered a more measured view ahead of the BMW Championship. While stressing that the PGA Tour’s depth was “unmatched”, Scheffler acknowledged some of LIV’s biggest names would strengthen the competition. “When you look at higher levels of LIV Golf there are definitely players that would provide a value to the tour and guys that I love competing against as well,” Scheffler said. Scheffler added there would “obviously” need to be some form of penalty attached to any potential return, but said his priority remained competing against the world’s best players as often as possible. The debate comes as LIV itself attempts to map out what comes next. LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil recently declared the sport does not need “another five years of fighting” as he called for greater collaboration across professional golf. “I hope we’re entering an era of greater collaboration and cooperation around the game with open pathways, player choice, multiple strong tours, more investment, more markets and more opportunities for the best players in the world to play against each other more often,” O’Neil said. For DeChambeau, however, the immediate message was considerably simpler. After years of division, criticism and questions surrounding LIV’s place in the sport, one of its biggest stars simply wants golf fans to remain open to what it can offer. “I hope people can see that we actually bring value to the game of golf.” And, as DeChambeau put it, give LIV “one more shot”.
