Jerry “The King” Lawler received one of the biggest honors of his legendary career on Aug. 20, but this time it didn’t come inside a wrestling ring. The WWE Hall of Famer was celebrated in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, during a special ceremony that recognized his lasting impact on both wrestling and the city itself. The tribute wasn’t about another championship reign or one last main event. Instead, it reflected the legacy Lawler has built over more than five decades. His journey proves that while titles can change hands, hometown respect is much harder to pin down. Lawler was joined by his son Kevin, WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart, legendary Memphis broadcaster Dave Brown, and several local political leaders. Brown praised Lawler’s remarkable journey, saying, “He got some breaks, but he made his own breaks.” He added that Lawler grew from being “the king of Memphis” to “the king of wrestling.” Furthermore, Brown noted his influence stretched from local and regional audiences to fans around the world. Brown also recalled that Lawler was specifically requested for WWE’s shows in Saudi Arabia several years ago. Lawler reflected on his childhood during the ceremony. He admitted he has “so many memories” of the street and remembered playing baseball and football on the nearby fields while growing up. As the face of Memphis wrestling, Lawler helped define the territory era as both a performer and a booker. He also became one of WWE’s most recognizable commentators, making his crown an iconic accessory in wrestling history. Now 76, Lawler remains closely connected to Memphis. During the ceremony, city leaders praised him as someone who never forgot his roots. They highlighted his time as a mayoral candidate and local business owner. Despite enduring a heart attack and multiple strokes in recent years, Lawler continues making public appearances. He most recently attended WrestleCon alongside Jim Ross. For a man known as “The King,” having a street bear his name emerges as another reminder that some legacies are built to go the distance.
