Manchester United target Lewis Hall is in discussions over an improved contract at Newcastle United, according to journalist Sam Cohen. The Red Devils have prioritised reinforcing their midfield department this summer. They have purchased Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Carlos Baleba could arrive from Brighton & Hove Albion in the coming days. The club are close to finalising a deal for the Cameroon international. A left-back could be prioritised after Baleba’s arrival. Hall has been mentioned as a top target for some time, but he could be out of reach. Newcastle have had a busy selling spree this summer and have parted ways with Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. The Tyneside outfit obviously don’t want to lose another prized asset, and United have been told Hall is not for sale in the current window, as per Cohen. The Red Devils have not entirely given up, but have now suffered a potential blow with the 21-year-old in discussions over an improved deal at Newcastle. The Chelsea graduate has also been offered a role within the leadership team under new head coach Matthias Jaissle. Man Utd could return for Hall next summer The Magpies have had a summer to forget. They have parted ways with three big players in Gordon, Tonali and Guimaraes, while manager Eddie Howe also stepped down. Howe was clearly unimpressed by the club’s transfer activity. The decision to sell Guimaraes to Arsenal proved the last straw for the English tactician, who opted to move on. It is highly unlikely that Newcastle will entertain another high-profile sale this summer, which means the Red Devils may have to play the waiting game to purchase Hall. Hall, described as ‘fearless’ by BBC Sport, could sign a long-term deal with a release clause, which ensures that he could pursue a new challenge at the end of the campaign. Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas looks the likelier candidate to join as Luke Shaw’s deputy at left-back this summer, but the Red Devils could still pursue another signing next year. Shaw has been injury-prone for most of his United career. His current contract expires in June next year with no option to extend. The 31-year-old could potentially walk away on a free transfer. Hence, we won’t be surprised if United revisit their interest in Hall next summer. The Red Devils already applied the same route for Baleba, having missed out on landing his services last year.
