Doug McNett, Pawnee County Attorney, said the teen died around 9 p.m. Tuesday. “I did not know the young man personally, but know his parents,” McNett said in a statement to the Great Bend Tribune. “They are very active in the community and my heart breaks for them.” According to McNett, the student is Rylan Reece, a junior aged 17 years old. It was also stated that the mother volunteers in the school district and his father used to be the undersheriff of Pawnee County. The 911 call came in at 8:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., Pawnee County Sheriff Larry Atteberry called McNett to inform him that the student had died after deputies and paramedics rushed to the practice field. According to the National Weather Service, it was 90 degrees with 58% humidity in Great Bend when Rylan died. There is no indication whether the weather contributed to the death of the teen. Wichita was chosen as the site for the autopsy that was originally scheduled for Garden City. Following Rylan’s family’s consent, McNett ordered the autopsy. Great Bend is about 40 miles southwest of Rozel, Kansas, where the high school is located. Approximately 140 students attend the Pawnee Heights School District.
