Tottenham-linked Manchester City midfielder has emerged as a target for Newcastle United. Tottenham Hotspur have rebuilt their defence and midfield earlier this summer transfer window. They have spent a lot of money on three new faces, whilst the rest three being free transfers. The North Londoners have brought in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to add solidity to their midfield ranks. Tonali was a star performer for Newcastle United, establishing himself as one of the coveted midfielders in the Premier League. Fernandes turned out to be one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise dismal last campaign for West Ham that ended in relegation. Roberto De Zerbi was quick to identify them as prime targets to improve his midfield unit, and Spurs backed our gaffer by luring the duo to N17. Before their signings, the Lilywhites were tentatively linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. Newcastle United eye move for Nico Gonzalez According to a report from The Athletic, Newcastle United have opened exploratory talks with Manchester City about signing Nico Gonzalez. Negotiations are not yet described as advanced, but contact between the clubs has been established. The Magpies are rebuilding their midfield after losing Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Tottenham and Arsenal, respectively. The duo have been pivotal players for the last few years and replacing them for the new season will not be easy. This has led the Newcastle United board to contact Man City for Gonzalez. The Spaniard joined the Sky Blues from Porto for around £52m in February 2025. Regardless of making 41 appearances, the defensive midfielder’s opportunities became more limited during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. And with Man City breaking the bank for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, and now closing in on LOSC Lille prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi, Gonzalez is set to drop down in the pecking order. The former Barcelona talent offers Premier League experience, technical ability and physicality when operating as a No.6, and the Toon Army could benefit from having such a presence in their side. He fits the profile of the technically gifted, possession-oriented midfielder that Matthias Jaissle wants in his system to excel in Tyneside. Sensing regular opportunities at City are expected to be limited, Gonzalez could push internally to leave the club and join Newcastle. From Tottenham’s perspective, De Zerbi already has several options in midfield. Until and unless there are exits, Spurs have no reason to splash the cash for Gonzalez.
