There is certainly no shortage of expectations surrounding Alexander Isak ahead of the new season. Liverpool spent huge money to bring the Swedish striker to Anfield, and with that comes enormous pressure to deliver. But according to Troy Deeney, Isak could be Liverpool’s X-factor this season. Speaking to BBC Sport, Deeney said: > “Ultimately they have got one X-factor – Isak. He is a top goalscorer who has got a point to prove because everyone has written him off.” And I have to admit, I really like that assessment. Isak has a point to prove There is a strange narrative surrounding Isak at the moment. Despite consistently showing that he can score goals at the highest level, there are still plenty of people questioning whether he can handle the expectations that come with being Liverpool’s No.9. That’s exactly what makes this season so interesting. Isak doesn’t need to prove that he can score goals. He’s already done that. What he needs to prove is that he can do it for Liverpool, under enormous pressure, while competing for trophies. And that could bring out the best in him. Liverpool finally have their No.9 For years, Liverpool have relied on different players to provide the goals from the centre-forward position. Now they have made a huge investment in Isak. The expectation is obvious. Score goals. And lots of them. But Isak offers more than simply finishing chances. His movement, ability to link play and intelligence around the penalty area can make him extremely difficult for defenders to handle. If Iraola can get the best out of those qualities, Liverpool could have a devastating attacking weapon. Iraola could be crucial One reason I’m particularly excited about Isak is the manager. Iraola wants Liverpool to play with intensity, quick passing and aggressive attacking movement. That could suit Isak perfectly. Imagine Liverpool winning the ball high up the pitch and immediately looking for Isak’s movement behind the defence. Or Wirtz finding him between the centre-backs. Or a winger running beyond him while Isak drops into space. There are so many possibilities. And then there is Florian Wirtz The potential partnership between Wirtz and Isak could be one of the most exciting things about Liverpool this season. Wirtz has the vision to find passes that other players simply don’t see. Isak has the movement to exploit them. If those two develop an understanding, Liverpool could have something special. And that’s before you consider the other attacking options Iraola has available. Maybe being written off is exactly what Isak needs Footballers are often at their most dangerous when they feel they have something to prove. Isak has now been handed the biggest challenge of his career. Liverpool have invested heavily in him. The supporters expect goals. The media will scrutinise every performance. And opposition defenders will be desperate to stop him. But if he responds by producing his best football, those doubts will disappear very quickly. Troy Deeney might have a point. Liverpool have plenty of talented players. But Alexander Isak could genuinely be the X-factor. If he stays fit and finds his rhythm, there is every chance he could explode into life and become the goalscoring force Liverpool need. Everyone has an opinion about Isak.
