Colby Donovan discussed Alistair Johnston’s injury setback, with the Canadian international set for a scan today. Donovan admitted how much Johnston’s absence has been felt in the dressing room.
Donovan started against LASK and put in a brilliant performance. However, he admitted that stepping into the team to replace Johnston comes with a lot of pressure.
He said (TCW): “Me and Ali are quite tight. For that to happen to him, you don’t want any of your players to get injured. He’s such a big player for us. It’s a big miss.
“But somebody’s got to step into his boots.”
Celtic will be hoping that Johnston isn’t out long-term, having missed much of last season, but one positive that can be taken is Donovan stepping up in his absence.
The thought of both fit is an exciting prospect, and Donovan clearly admires Johnston. Their friendship is certainly something supporters will be delighted to hear about. At 27, the Canadian has experienced most things in football and knows the position well, while Donovan has watched on from the sidelines and learned from his teammate. That has been clear to see at times.
O’Neill will be set to address Johnston’s injury at Friday’s press conference, and hopefully he has not suffered a setback, as he had just looked back to his best when starting games again.
