Newcastle United’s former players have drawn the headlines this summer. Manchester City were happy to pay £116 million to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. That one would have hurt Newcastle United fans, as the Magpies had had to let him go due to financial pressures a few years back. Since then, his stock has skyrocketed. Anderson is not the only one who has been doing well since leaving Newcastle United though. The same can be said for a winger as well. In fact, he has been on the receiving end of an offer from Liverpool recently, even though he never even got to play a game for Newcastle United before leaving. Liverpool make £50m bid for former Newcastle United player According to The Athletic, Brighton & Hove Albion have rejected a £50 million bid from Liverpool for Yankuba Minteh. Interestingly, the winger is set to remain out for another eight weeks with an injury. Minteh was on the books at Newcastle United just a few years ago. But the winger did not make a single appearance for the Magpies. He was signed from OB for around €7 million and immediately sent out on loan. That proved to be the right step as well, as he enjoyed a phenomenal spell at Feyenoord. Under normal circumstances, you would expect that to earn him opportunities at Newcastle United. Instead, the club sanctioned a £30 million move to Brighton & Hove Albion before he could ever don the black-and-white jersey. Newcastle let Minteh go too early Minteh’s rise has continued since joining Brighton & Hove Albion. And clearly he is rated highly enough for Liverpool to launch a transfer bid, even as he is out injured. With Newcastle United’s lack of depth on the wings following the departure of Anthony Gordon, they could certainly have done with someone like Minteh right now. Unfortunately, there is no buyback clause at play. And even if there was, it is hard to imagine that the club would be able to convince the winger to return. Newcastle United have had a tough time convincing players to join this summer, largely due to the lack of European football on offer. But even overall, this looks like a project that is now headed in the wrong direction. The Magpies have lost their best players this summer. Their reaction has been to sign players in their late teens or early 20s, although most of them are clearly not ready to first-team regulars, which is the club needed to replace.
