Major Milwaukee Brewers Rumor Reveals New Details on Why Tarik Skubal Trade Pursuit Failed & What Was Offered

A major update on the Milwaukee Brewers‘ pursuit of a blockbuster Tarik Skubal trade earlier this week reveals that the club’s failure to make a deal certainly wasn’t from a lack of trying. The Brewers have been one of the best stories in MLB this season. Yes, they have proven for some time that they are a very well-run organization. However, few expected them to own the best record in baseball (72-43) as we head into the second weekend in August. This year’s team has been so good that they have a chance to be the first in club history to win 100 or more regular-season games. Yet, their playoff failures over the past three years are evidence that they needed to be aggressive in improving the roster before this week’s MLB trade deadline if they hoped to be a legitimate threat to the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the postseason. That is why they were often linked to a trade for the Detroit Tigers superstar. The two-time Cy Young Award winner certainly could have bolstered their chances of reaching the World Series for just the second time in franchise history. What did Milwaukee Brewers offer in Tarik Skubal trade talks? However, to the dismay of many MLB fans, the Dodgers — of all teams — won the trade sweepstakes for the two-time All-Star. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, LA beat out the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Brewers in the trade chase. And in his latest report, he offered up some new details on why Milwaukee came up short in the battle for Skubal. The veteran MLB insider claims the Brewers certainly had the trade chips to get a deal done if they offered top infield prospect Jesus Made and Luis Pena. But Made — who is the No. 1 ranked prospect on MLB.com’s top 100 — was always off limits in talks for a player that would be a three-month rental. However, they did make proposals that included Pena (No. 18 in MLB.com’s rankings). “Some of those paths included pitching. Some included Peña and outfielder Alexander Frias. Some included infielder/outfielder Jett Williams, whose stock among some evaluators is not as high as it was last offseason.” -Ken Rosenthal Why the Milwaukee Brewers did NOT make the right decision The Brewers’ decision to pass on giving up Made makes sense. Many think the stud prospect has the talent to at least be a borderline All-Star consistently at the big league level. Furthermore, there is zero chance they will re-sign Skubal since he is expected to seek out a record contract for a pitcher that could be near $500 million in the offseason. Yet, as mentioned before, the club has a real chance to get to the World Series for only the second time since the Brewers made their MLB debut in 1969. These opportunities don’t come along often, especially for a small market club. If they can get past LA, they would be a favorite to beat whatever team comes out of the American League this October. Yes, Made could become a superstar. However, they are doing just fine without him right now and should have much of this team for a couple more seasons. Plus, there is a chance Made doesn’t live up to expectations in MLB. If the Brewers felt Skubal could be the final piece of a title team, they should have rolled the dice to achieve a rare feat in club history and trust they can continue to make talented prospects in the future.
