Klay Thompson’s father, Mychal, claims he is doing what he can to make a rumored trade that sends his son to his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, a reality. For years, there has always been speculation about the five-time All-Star one day following in his father’s footsteps by suiting up for the Lakers. The elder Thompson won a pair of championships in LA during the 1980s, and that obviously had a major influence on his son’s passion for basketball. Yet, Thompson wearing the purple and gold has never gotten close to ever happening. That is, until this week. According to The Athletic’s Christian Clark, the 36-year-old is open to the idea of being traded to Los Angeles this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks are currently looking to move him and the $17.4 million left on his contract. However, they haven’t had any takers so far. After a fan on X tagged Thompson and told him to “get back on it” after the Clark report emerged, the 12-year NBA veteran responded by writing, “I’m TRYING.“ In a follow-up post, a different fan wrote, “Now that LeBron is not a Laker, you can tell Klay he can join the Lakers franchise as an LA kid. That rivalry meant something to Klay. But now he can team up with Luka like he originally wanted to when he went to Dallas.” The elder Thompson was a big fan of that thought. “I know…Excellent idea,” he wrote in response. Who knows if Thompson has any pull to actually lean on Lakers management to make the trade happen. However, at the very least, he is trying to type the idea into reality again this summer.
