'No truth' in rumours linking Luton with Birmingham City full back Powell’s love of football took him to St Andrew’s Luton boss Jack Wilshere has stated there is ‘no truth’ in the rumours linking Town with a move for Birmingham City full back Lee Buchanan this week. The 25-year-old, who began his career with Derby County, had a stint at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen before heading to St Andrew’s in July 2023 for a reported seven figure deal. He played 39 times for the Blues before suffering serious knee ligament damage in December 2024 and hasn’t made a competitive appearance since then. Buchanan has proved his fitness during pre-season and featured against Barcelona in a pre-season friendly under the watchful gaze of Luton assistant manager Chris Powell, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that the ex-England international was scouting the left back in preparation for a loan move being readied by the Hatters. That was immediately rebuffed by Wilshere this afternoon though, as asked if there was anything in the speculation, he said: “No, Chris Powell went to watch because he lives in Birmingham and he loves football, and Barcelona were playing there. Of course, if he sees someone that he likes, we talk about it, but there’s no truth in that.” Although Buchanan clearly won’t be coming to Bedfordshire, when Town announced their squad numbers for the upcoming campaign on Friday, then with Lasse Nordas, Jerry Yates, Reuell Walters and Thomas Holmes all not assigned one, and defender Teden Mengi allowed to leave as well, it gives Luton five spaces available to bring in players over the age of 21. It’s something that Wilshere will do if one of his targets becomes available, as he continued: “Yes, we’re working, like we have done all summer. We’ve done really well up until now, but I’ve said it before, we’re not just going to bring players in that won’t improve us straight away. I think we’ve done that really well, we identified at the end of the season what we think we need and I think the most important thing about that is really going into detail about it. "It’s not always a recruitment gap that you’re missing, it might be something from us as coaches, or something we see in the team that we need to improve, but there were some areas we thought we could improve and we’ve done that. We’re still working away and if the right thing comes up, we’ll definitely be ready for that.” Wilshere would love one of those spots to be filled by Manchester City attacker Emilio Lawrence, revealing last week that the Hatters were ‘in the conversation’ to bring the Scotland U21 international back to Kenilworth Road on a season-long loan following his impressive impact last term. Discussing if there was any further update on a potential reunion, the Town chief added: “No, but I’ve spoken about it a lot so everyone knows where I stand with that. And yes, if there is something to update, you guys will be the first to know.”
