St Helens have found their next head coach with the Super League club making a huge splash and appointing the current Australia boss Kevin Walters. Walters, who led the Kangaroos in last year’s Ashes series and will do so again at this year’s World Cup is among the most experienced coaches in the game and his signing is a major coup for Saints. It’s been confirmed that Walters will take up his role at St Helens after the conclusion of the World Cup, and with Australia expected by many to go the whole way and win the tournament, that would mean he won’t be in England until a few days after the final on November 15th. It was also announced that like his predecessor, Walters will be hired on a three-year deal, thus tying him to the club until the end of the 2029 season. A club statement confirmed the signing, reading: “St Helens RFC are delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Walters as the Club’s new Head Coach for the next three seasons.” NRL lowball Super League, Hull FC’s gargantuan signing, and new title favourites – Click here to watch this week’s episode of the Serious About Rugby League Show St Helens hire Kevin Walters on three-year deal Saints have claimed that Walters’ appointment ‘represents another significant statement of St Helens’ standing on the global stage’ and they would be right, with the Australian among the sport’s premier coaches. Speaking on the importance of the announcement, club chairman Eamonn McManus said: “Kevin’s vast experience at both club and representative levels is self-evident. “His motivation to succeed with the task at hand was both clear and compelling to us, as shown by the major career sacrifices that he is making in Australia to join St Helens. “This is a major statement of ambition both by St.Helens and by Super League.” McManus also thanked those involved with the Australian rugby league set-up for allowing the move to happen, a nod to the fact that Walters will end his tenure in charge of the national team as he takes on the Saints role. “We would like to place on record our thanks to the understanding and professionalism of Peter V’Landys and the ARL Commission in facilitating Kevin’s move to us. “Eamon O’Carroll will continue as our interim Head Coach until the end of this season. He has been magnificent for us under testing circumstances, and I am sure that our fans will remain firmly behind him and the team.”
