Mathys Tel not at risk of repeat of 'unbelievable' scenes last season Mathys Tel will not be excluded from Tottenham's squad this season. That is the view of Spurs expert John Wenham, ahead of the start of the new campaign. The former Bayern Munich man was the victim of Champions League registration rules last season. Thomas Frank omitted the 21-year-old from the 25-man list for that competition in September. He was then added to the squad in December with Dominic Solanke's injury, before dropping out against in January. Wenham thinks that he will not have the same issue this season, with the Lilywhites not being in Europe among other reasons. Why Mathys Tel will not be treated the same at Tottenham this time around Wenham believes that will not the case in the 2026-27 season, though, due to the business that Spurs have done so far. Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “We’ll probably leave out Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert because they’re going to be out. “Tel, they kept putting him in and then leaving him back out again. It was unbelievable what they did to the poor bloke, last season. “All this fanfare about them putting him back in, then one game later, after the knockout, he was taken back out again. “He’s our starting left winger at the moment, because we haven’t signed anybody, he’ll have to play. “Someone else will have to be, I mean, we have moved on a lot of players this summer, like Djed Spence and Cristian Romero, with Guglielmo Vicario gone as well, I think we’ll be alright in terms of our foreign player numbers, because we just keep moving people out the door.” Why Tel could succeed at Tottenham this season Tel had bright moments last season, notching five goals and two assists in 40 matches in all competitions. Roberto De Zerbi clearly trusts him, as he started four and played in all seven of his games in charge at the end of the campaign. He will now be banking on the young forward to show what he can do, and prove that he can go up to another le There is every chance of that, with the added quality that the N17 outfit have added this summer in and around him. If a new winger is not signed before the transfer window closes, that will give Tel a huge opportunity to step up.
