The Central Zone Swimming Selection Competitions began in Kabul on Wednesday, bringing together 60 athletes from six provinces, the Afghanistan National Aquatics Federation said.
The one-day event is being organized by the National Aquatics Federation in cooperation with the Kabul Directorate of Physical Education and Sports. Athletes are competing in four swimming styles across four age categories: children, youth, juniors and adults. A number of para-swimmers are also taking part in the competitions.
At the conclusion of the event, 20 top-performing athletes will be selected to participate in a month-long training camp. Following the training camp, five athletes will be chosen from among the selected participants to represent Afghanistan at the upcoming Asian Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi.
Officials said the competitions are aimed at identifying the best swimming talents from the Central Zone and providing them with an opportunity to improve their skills and prepare for international competitions.
The organizers also highlighted the event as part of efforts to strengthen Afghanistan’s swimming talent pool and prepare promising athletes for major regional competitions. The Kabul Times
