Liberty volleyball coach on the verge of another career milestone
LIBERTY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -A local coach is on the verge of yet another milestone in what a Hall of Fame-like coaching career at Liberty High School.
Coach Jennifer Sewell and her Bulldogs opened the season with a road win at Wewa last night, marking the 299th win for coach Sewell in her career as the head coach at Liberty. So, she’s on the precipice of the 300 wins milestone and can get there with a win in the team’s home opener against Franklin Thursday night. Bear in mind, Sewell also already has 300-plus wins as the head coach of the Liberty softball program. And has two state titles at Liberty in both volleyball and softball. An incredible run in 22 years of leading young women on the gym floor and the diamond.
“Getting to the milestone of 300 in volleyball, I got to it in spring of 2025 in softball, but to get to it in volleyball here too is pretty cool.” the coach told us during a Zoom call Wednesday afternoon. “And it just shows the hard work over the years of these kids in this program. These kids that we have, these Lady Bulldogs, they come in every year, every summer, they hit the ground running and want to work, want to win. No matter, like I say all the time, it doesn’t matter if we’re playing rock, paper, scissors, they’re playing to win. What’s the point of playing? And, you know, I take a lot of the, give a lot of the credit to these kids that’s been part of this program that’s helped me reach this milestone.”
It’s tough to try to determine how many coaches in the state, or anywhere in the country for that matter, have racked up 300 or more wins in two different sports. While also winning two state titles in each of those sports. Certainly, coach Sewell is in an exclusive club, if not alone in that club.
“Yeah, it’d be interesting to see what the statistics were; to see how many coaches coach multi-sports and what their win and loss record is. It’s fun. I have a lot of kids that play volleyball that also play softball, so it’s fun getting to coach them almost year-round in two different sports. But I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, so it’s been a good time, and hopefully this year we’ll have a good ending of the season.”
This is a bittersweet time for Sewell and the Bulldogs faithful, just a few weeks ago the coach’s best friend, and fellow 1999 Liberty teammate and alum, one of the coaching architects of Liberty volleyball, Casi Peddie passed away after a battle with cancer. That’s her far left in the team picture. Her motto was always “Dig in Deep”, and coach Sewell says her team has adopted that motto this season in honor of coach Peddie.
