Vanenza Masai completed a golden double as Kenya continued to dominate the track and field events at the 23rd Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania. Masai, a student at Kongit Secondary School in Mt Elgon, added the women’s 3,000m title to the junior women’s 6km cross-country gold she won on Monday at the Gymkhana Club Golf Course. On the opening day of the track and field programme at Jamhuri Stadium, Masai produced a tactical performance to win the 3,000m in 9:13.5. Compatriot Millicent Chepkonga of Chepsaita Secondary School finished second in 9:15.7, while Tanzania’s Helena Samja took bronze in 9:31.3. “I’m happy for the second gold medal for my country. This is the first event for me outside Kenya, and I’m satisfied with my performance,” said Masai. “I want to thank my coaches for helping me achieve this. I will step up my training because I want to represent Kenya at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.” Mercy Chepng’eno of Chakalk Secondary School also struck gold for Kenya in the women’s 1,500m, winning in 4:24.2 ahead of compatriot Sheila Chepng’eno, who clocked 4:26.3. Cornelius Kibichi of Chepsaita added another gold in the men’s 5,000m, crossing the finish line in 14:02.8. Tanzania’s Benard Emmanuel, who had won silver in Monday’s cross-country race, settled for another second-place finish in 14:14.2. Wilson Chepkwech claimed Kenya’s gold in the men’s 1,500m after clocking 3:51.7. Uganda’s Timothy Cheptoyet was second in 3:56.9, with Tanzania’s Gabriel Wema third in 3:59.0. Kenya also dominated the hurdles, with Vincent Kipkoech of Kenegut winning the men’s 400m hurdles in 54.61. His compatriot Vincent Kipchumba took silver in 54.96, while Tanzania’s Pastory Kibose was third in 55.37. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Celestine Jepleting claimed gold in 64.9 seconds, beating Uganda’s Peace Mbabazi, who clocked 65.5, while Valerian Ombasa finished third in 66.8. Team Kenya also swept the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay titles and added gold in the medley relay as the country strengthened its grip on the athletics programme. The strong showing underlined Kenya’s dominance as the East African schools battle for honours at the ongoing Games in Morogoro.
