Independent wrestler Leo Sparrow came close to joining WWE — just not in the way most wrestlers dream about. Years before making a name for himself on the independent scene, Sparrow was offered a full-time corporate role with the company. However, he ultimately chose a far different path. The story, shared during his appearance on Busted Open After Dark as the first guest on Tommy Dreamer’s revived Indie Spotlight segment, reveals how one career decision changed the direction of his life. Sometimes, the biggest bump isn’t taken in the ring — it’s betting on yourself. Leo Sparrow explains why he turned down WWE’s full-time office offer Growing up on Long Island, Sparrow always wanted to be involved in professional wrestling. However, after hearing people tell him he was “too small” and “not athletic,” he shifted his focus toward the business side of the industry. He earned a bachelor’s degree in operations management to further his ambitions. That led to an internship opportunity with WWE’s community relations department. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought those plans to a halt. Sparrow explained that WWE later reached back out with an even bigger opportunity. “They said… we’re thinking about… skip the internship program, just invite you on full time.” By then, however, he had already spent six months training at the Create A Pro Wrestling Academy under Brian Myers, Max Caster, and Pat Buck. Rather than accepting the security of a corporate position, he decided to chase his wrestling dream. “The world was ending, so I just decided to kind of bet on myself. So I said thank you, but no thank you.” That gamble has already produced memorable moments. In January 2022, Sparrow appeared on both WWE RAW and AEW Rampage during the same week. He also recalled facing MJF during the latter’s first AEW World Championship reign, calling it the experience that “taught me how to really wrestle.” Sparrow has also developed a unique “spinach-shooting” persona and recently focused on transforming his physique, describing it as the final piece needed to elevate his career. Dreamer wrapped up the interview with a strong endorsement, telling Sparrow, “You, sir, are ready,” while expressing hope that the independent standout earns his big break.
